Cheap homemade cleaning products to save money

Did you know you could make effective bathroom cleaning products using cheaply available household ingredients? Not only are these cleansers cheap and easy to make but they are so much better for the environment and the health of your household.

Today we’re going to focus on one place that gets a lot of dirt and grim – the tiles! So here’s our recipe for a homemade, nasty chemical-free tile and tub cleaner.

You will need:

Baking soda
Vegetable oil-based liquid soap
White vinegar
A clean jar or even better, a spray bottle.

To make, simply add 1 2/3 cups of baking soda to your container and top with 1/2 cup of vegetable oil-based liquid soap. Give a swirl to combine then add 1/2 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Put the lid on and give it a good shake to combine. The basic product has little scent so if you would prefer to add a little fragrance to this product, you can add a few drops of essential oil along with the water and vinegar. When adding essential oils opt for an oil that has antiseptic or antibacterial qualities such as tea tree, lemon, pine or eucalyptus.

Don’t forget to label your tile and tub cleaner and like all cleaning products, keep out of reach of children.

Remember to shake before use and apply with a sponge or micro fibre cloth. Rinse well with water.

You can also make a very handy low-cost glass cleaner by adding 1/4 cup of white vinegar and 4 cups water to a clean spray bottle. Spray directly onto mirrors and glass surfaces and wipe off with a lint-free cloth, clean micro fibre cloth or, as my mother swears, a sheet of newspaper. You’ll be left with streak-free windows and mirrors, and a few dollars extra in your purse!
